Multi-Cloud Is The Default In Higher Ed
Multi-cloud is advised by many as counterproductive, too expensive, and complex to implement. However, this article suggests that things are different in the world of higher education.

A Culture of Candor
Ed Catmull, the co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, has a strong belief in the importance of candid feedback and the removal of power structures in order to drive change and improve businesses. He encourages an open culture where everyone is able to give and receive honest feedback and where ego is left at the door. This approach has been embraced at Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Industrial Light & Magic. Seeking out problems and encouraging others to do the same is crucial to a business's success, as it allows issues to be addressed and improved upon before they become bigger problems. Candid feedback can sometimes be difficult to hear, but it is essential for the growth and success of any organization.

Techies try to bypass damaged UPS, send 380V into the air traffic system
A power outage at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines caused significant disruption to flights on New Year's Day, affecting more than 65,000 passengers and 360 flights. The Air Traffic Management Centre (ATMC) was hit by a power outage at around 9:49 am local time, which also affected radio, radar, and internet communications. The ATMC outage disrupted the Manila Flight Information Region, which covers the whole of the Philippines, causing all commercial flights to be redirected. The glitch led to a 72-hour delay in returning to normal operations. The cause of the power failure was identified as a problem with the electrical network for the Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management system. The two backup power supplies also failed, one because its blowers conked out and the other because it failed to come online. The system was already outdated when it was fully operational in July 2019, having been implemented in 2018. The system is now a decade out of date.

Reproducibility!
This article is focussing on OCAML, but it is interesting because it talks about reproducible software tooling and why it’s important for certain use cases.

Risk Assessments For AWS Access Are Not Just For Large Companies
Using asset-based risk assessments can help engineering leaders reduce anxiety around the number of developers who have access to production environments. A lightweight risk assessment can be created using a pared-down version of a template used for ISO 27001 risk assessments. The process involves filling out a spreadsheet with details of the resources and services in an AWS account that could be accessed by bad actors, the unauthorized access that could be gained, the impact of such access, the likelihood of it happening, the current controls in place and the risk score. The risk score is calculated by multiplying the impact and likelihood together. The risk assessment can then be used to prioritize risk-mitigation efforts and provide confidence that the most important things are being worked on to protect a company.

26 programming languages in 25 days, Part 1: Strategy, tactics, and logistics
A programmer solved 25 puzzles in 25 days, using a different programming language for each puzzle. They ranked the languages by their expressiveness and the programmer's experience with them and used the "minimum viable language" for each day's puzzle. They learned 12 new languages from scratch, had little experience in 4 languages, and used 9 languages they had known well at some point. They used a total of 26 languages, combining sed and bc in one day. They found that learning how to learn a new language was the key meta-learning experience and that it helped them build an appreciation for the strengths and intended domains of different languages. They suggest using truly novel languages for the first 15 days and saving the best languages for days 16 and beyond, and recommend keeping a reserved list of languages for backup.

Hybrid cloud infrastructure modernisation
Hybrid clouds are a solution for organizations that want the benefits of both private and public clouds. Private clouds offer lower operational costs and tighter control but can be expensive to set up and not as scalable. Public clouds offer ease of scalability but can become costly over time. Hybrid clouds combine the benefits of both, allowing organizations to carefully consider their options for private cloud vendors and the implications for application design and development, workload orchestration, and long-term maintenance.
